What:  Women's Empowerment and Self-Protection Workshop

When: Wednesday, August 5, 2026 from 6:00pm-8:30pm

Where: MaineHealth Institute for Research, 81 Research Drive, Scarborough campus

Tuition: $50 - tuition is approved for reimbursement through the WOW Well-being Reimbursement program via the Espresa platform for MaineHealth benefit-eligible team members

This workshop provides fundamental concepts of breath work, body posture and structural alignment, and techniques for increasing relaxation and reducing tension. Life can be stressful! These principles will be applied to support efficient movement and reactions during high stress or conflict situations. We will practice simulated situations and work with a partner. Share with the women in your life – this workshop is open to community members who are not MaineHealth employees. Suitable for daughters high school age and older to attend with moms. We are proud to have offered this program to our MaineHealth community for >15 years! 

 

Our workshop will be led by Sensei James, a specialist in the traditional Japanese martial arts with over 30 years of teaching experience. He is an internationally licensed instructor with multiple Dan (black belt) rankings and in 1997 he was awarded the Renshi, indicating a level of senior proficiency. His unique insight into mind/body unity and human nature is backed by his study and practice of the Japanese esoteric traditions. He has traveled extensively, leading personal development seminars and workshops. In his own training, he combines his love of nature, meditation, and intense, old style martial arts for an ultimate mind/body challenge. 

 

The $50 workshop tuition is approved for reimbursement through the WOW Well-being Reimbursement program via the Espresa platform for MaineHealth benefit-eligible team members. Students are always half price. Payment will be accepted via venmo or by cash or check at the door. Pre-registration is required, and groups of 4 registering together get a discount with advance payment. Some scholarships are available for attendance - please ask.
