Support our
Marathoners
We have several MaineHealth colleagues in research who are in training to compete in marathons to raise money for worthy cases this fall! In this series, we can live vicariously through Liz Scharnetzki (Philadelphia Marathon in November), Liz Bergst, and Anyonya Guntur (both running the Chicago Marathon in October), who share the motivation and progress in their training! Please consider supporting their efforts by sponsoring their participation in their races!
Anyonya Guntur just completed a half marathon yesterday in Sao Paulo as part of his training:

Liz Bergst (and her family) and Noni Guntur will participate in the Chicago Marathon in October 2026
If you’ve been out in the parking lot at 81 Research Drive at the end of the day lately, you might have seen Faculty Scientist Anyonya Guntur and RTE Manager Liz Bergst and a group of running friends heading out into the neighborhood for a training run. Liz and Noni are part of a training team that has run a number of races over the years, and right now they are gearing up for the biggest one yet- the Chicago Marathon coming up this October. It’s the first marathon for both Noni and Liz, and they are running it along with another teammate, and Liz’s husband and daughter. Noni is running for the Mitochondrial Foundation Charity Team (https://fundraisers.hakuapp.com/anyonya-guntur) and Liz, her husband, daughter, and other teammate are running for the Team World Vision, the world’s largest NGO provider of clean water (TheMaineCrewRunsChicago - Fundraising For Team World Vision). Check out their fundraising pages if you want to support them in this run!
Liz Scharnetzki will participate in the Philadelphia Marathon in November 2026
Also running a marathon on a charity team this fall is Faculty Scientist Liz Scharnetzki. Liz will be running the Philadelphia Marathon alongside Team DetermiNation, in support of the American Cancer Society. This opportunity has significant meaning for Liz. As a cancer researcher, she studies how the stigma and nihilism surrounding cancer impacts patients and survivors — influencing access to care, quality of life, and the support people receive throughout their journeys. For Liz, every mile will represent a commitment to breaking down barriers to care and supporting patients and survivors. If you'd like to support Liz and Team DetermiNation, you can find her fundraising page here:
Additionally, if you have a loved one who has been impacted by cancer and feel comfortable doing so, either write their name in the donation comment box or send it to Liz directly. She plans to write the names of supporters' loved ones on her race shoes, so she can carry them her across the finish line.

Why I Support the American Cancer Society
As a cancer researcher, I study how the stigma and nihilism surrounding cancer impact patients and survivors — influencing access to care, quality of life, and the support people receive throughout their journeys.
This year, I’m running the Philadelphia Marathon in support of the American Cancer Society to help fund research, patient services, advocacy, and programs that make cancer treatment more accessible and equitable for everyone. Every mile represents a commitment to breaking down barriers to care, supporting patients and survivors, and moving us closer to a future where no one faces cancer alone.
By standing with the American Cancer Society, I stand with the more than 18 million cancer survivors in the U.S. today—and with those who may one day hear the words, “You have cancer.” That's why I'd be so grateful for your support. Please donate to my efforts, and together, we can help end cancer as we know it—for everyone.
Thank you for supporting this mission and helping turn every step into progress against cancer.

I’m proud to be running as part of Team Activate, supporting the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (UMDF). Through Team Activate, UMDF unites runners across the country to raise awareness and critical funds for those living with mitochondrial disease. Every dollar raised fuels hope for better treatments, answers, and ultimately a cure. Your participation and support power UMDF’s mission to promote research, education, and support for the mitochondrial community. Together, we bring energy, hope, and progress to thousands of families across the nation. Join us today—because with every step, we move closer to a cure. Thank you for being part of this journey.

We are running with Team World Vision to help provide life-changing clean water to children and communities in developing countries. But this is not just for runners. If you have ever wanted to do something about global poverty, say YES. You can do this. In Africa, there is a saying: "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." Join us and let's go farther together!
