Speak Up for Safety: New Policy Effective January 1 Providing outstanding and safe patient care is a priority at MaineHealth. As our operating model work continues across our organization, our efforts to standardize policies (such as PPID) and practices to support care team members and a culture of safety have also progressed. MaineHealth is taking the next step forward with a new system-wide policy that details how care team members can address an urgent patient safety issue or significant concern. Effective January 1, 2024 the Safety Stop, Escalation using CUS and Chain of Command policy encourages – and, in fact, requires – that care team members speak up for safety. CUS stands for concerned, uncomfortable, stop. Vice President and Associate Chief Quality Officer Mark Parker, MD, says, “Speaking up for safety in healthcare means that anyone can speak up and address a safety concerns at any time, in a non-judgmental way and without fear. This new system-wide policy reflects all of our values, especially being patient-centered, taking ownership and supporting a respectful environment. We want all care team members to know that if you see something concerning, there are tools you can use to get the attention you need.” Leaders are currently sharing, and will continue to share information about this policy and the tools to support you. Roxann Lord-Gregory Scholarship Awardee Selected  Congratulations to Susan McCombe on being awarded the $500 Roxann Lord-Gregory scholarship for the Class of August 2024.
Roxann was a registered nurse at Maine Medical Center for 38 years. Her career began in the operating room and continued as a dedicated instructor for the School of Surgical Technology. Roxann passed away in 2022 after battling pancreatic cancer. The School of Surgical Technology is currently accepting applications for the incoming September 2024 class. Med/Surg Skills Fair Serves 700+ Nursing Staff | .jpg) Educators from the Nursing Education and Professional Development Office and many wonderful volunteers from all of the Medical Surgical units were able to get 727 people through the recent Med/Surg skills fair!
The event was held at the MaineHealth building in Scarborough. We wish to thank all the staff at 301 US Rte 1 for their willingness to help and for welcoming us for these two weeks.

Privacy Reminder: Avoid Sloppy Search Techniques Did you know that there is a wrong way to search for patients? The Positive Patient Identification (PPID) policy provides us with acceptable patient identifiers and best practices for identifying your patient. Verify that it’s your patient by confirming two identifiers before accessing their information. Avoid these sloppy searching techniques: · Searching lists for could-be patients · “diagnosis” and “procedure” are not acceptable identifiers · Scrolling through dozens of names · Only click if you’re reasonably sure it’s your patient Be conscientious of why you’re clicking, scrolling or hovering on patient information. Remember, all access is logged, including patient lookups. While there might not be ill intent, you could still be asked to explain your actions. Weekly Construction Update The Malone Family Tower The Malone Family Tower project interior and exterior work continues. Workforce last week remained nearly steady with 230 workers on site daily. Major medical equipment deliveries and install continue in the OR’s, along with overall coordination and phasing/transmission meetings. Architectural punch list walk through continues on multiple levels. Basement through level 2 remains on schedule for a late December temporary certificate of occupancy. Touch up painting continues and final construction cleaning begins on the first floor. Millwork install continues on the second floor. Additional finish work on the third floor continues and includes painting and flooring. Ceiling grid and flooring continues on level 4 and 5. In wall inspection start on level 5. Cart washers and sinks have been deliver and install continues on the SPD level 6. Electrical, mechanical infrastructure and information technology cable tray and conduits continue on levels 6 and 7. Low voltage IT/IS cabling on multiple floors continues. Punch list walks in areas nearing completion continue. Exterior work for the week will include the continuation of the Bean Bridge enabling work, installation of the green roof pavers and landscape curbing continues on level 3 as weather permits. Stone work continues at employee entrance. |
