A Message from Andy: Roe vs. Wade Decision

Dear Care Team Members, MaineHealth’s vision of  “Working together so our communities are the healthiest in America ” depends upon our ability to provide high-quality, comprehensive health care services to our patients. Access to the full continuum of reproductive care is a critical part of that. We strongly believe our patients should have a voice in their care. It is essential to preserving that voice that our patients have the right to choose whether to terminate a pregnancy. MaineHealth’s respect for that freedom of choice extends to individuals for whom terminating a pregnancy is not an option, as well as to those care team members whose beliefs lead them to decline to participate in providing this service, something MaineHealth has made clear in the  exemptions to patient care policy . Today’s decision by the Supreme Court of the United States to strike down the Roe v. Wade precedent guaranteeing a woman’s access to the full continuum of reproductive health servic...

Pride month invitation from Liz Jacobs

Celebrating Pride! Colleagues-   We are doing two things to celebrate Pride this month.   First, we are hosting a virtual gathering on Tuesday, June 28, 2022, 4-5pm, where I invite people to come and talk about how they experience Pride for themselves, their loved ones and friends, or any other wonderful things the LGBTQ+ community brings to the world. Please come and share a word, story, experience, or anything that embodies this celebration for you. We plan to make a word cloud to share and would like to use it to create a piece of art to display at MHIR! If you cannot make it, please reply with something you’d like to see included.   Second, we have ordered  new ID badge pulls  that celebrate PRIDE and have options for pronouns . We hope they come in soon and will let you know when they do.

Nature news: ‘Ignored and not appreciated’: Women’s research contributions often go unrecognized

Thanks to Ilka Pinz for this contribution!   NEWS 22 June 2022 ‘Ignored and not appreciated’: Women’s research contributions often go unrecognized Data reveal that to earn credit on scientific articles, women need to work harder than men. By Holly Else Women are less likely to be named as authors on articles or as inventors on patents than are their male team mates, despite doing the same amount of work, according to an analysis of how research contributions are recognized. This is partly because women’s contributions to research are “often not known, not appreciated or ignored”, say the authors. The results, published in  Nature  today 1 , hold true for almost all research fields and career stages in the United States. And although the study focused on women, the authors say they saw similar patterns for people from other groups that are marginalized in science. The research is “innovative and important” because it partly explains why women publish less than men, says Vi...
