The impact the COVID pandemic on depression will be highlighted. Strategies and treatments options for these widespread mood disorders will be presented as well as resources for further support. As you all know, this was a "hard" week for Texans. I put hard in quotes because for some of us it was uncomfortable, for others it tipped their family over the edge and they became homeless, their food insecurity grew exponentially, or it was fatal. While the response from politicians was very "Texan" (see Tim Boyd of Colorado City, TX and Ted Cruz), there is a vibrant community of new Texans who recognize that we depend on each other. They rallied to raise funds and deliver service--much needed bottled water, food, and money for hotels. Many people have asked me where they might donate. Here are some good places that I know and trust. Excerpts from Picture a Scientist - some discussion from: Paula Johnson MPH, MD, President, Wellesley College and Kathryn Clancy PhD, Biological Anthropologist The best estimates are that about 50% of women faculty and staff experience sexual harassment, and those numbers have not really shifted over time.  Generally speaking, sexual forms of sexual harassment like come-ons, unwanted sexual advances - those are actually the rarest forms of sexual harassment, they actually don't happen very much. Mostly you see put-downs. We use the metaphor of an iceberg to get across the various forms of sexual harassment. What's gotten most of the attention is unwanted sexual attention, coercion - those are in the public eye and I think everyone would agree that we absolutely have to address those.   February 18, 2021   National Institutes of Health Awards MaineHealth $12.8M    MaineHealth has been awarded a five-year, $12.8 million Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) grant by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the National Institutes of Health. The funding will be used by the Maine Medical Center Research Institute (MMCRI) to support clinical research aimed at reducing rural health disparities in acute care settings.   The funding will be used to develop a statewide research and care network in Maine that addresses barriers associated with limited resources, expertise and access in rural areas and will begin with the support of four clinical studies.
