Research at MaineHealth

For over 30 years, research excellence has been a foundational principle of Maine Medical Center and MaineHealth. As a health system, an integral part of MaineHealth's mission is to educate tomorrow's caregivers and to research ways to provide optimal care that best meets the health needs of our communities.

Medical discoveries start at the earliest stages in a research laboratory and a scientist's imagination. These discoveries fill knowledge gaps and improve our ability to provide the best clinical care to improve human health. In Research, our basic discovery efforts have translated into clinical studies and novel methods for screening, preventive medicine, understanding of causes and risk factors of disease, and addressing access to care and health disparities. This expertise and knowledge further impacts quality of care, policies and protocols around medical science and health care, and the ability to monitor and improve health outcomes and population health. In Maine, this is important to study to ensure people in rural areas receive the same quality of care as those in urban areas.

Our research community (past and present) and infrastructure at MaineHealth comprise a thriving, multidisciplinary network that provides high quality jobs, outstanding training and development of talent in life sciences and healthcare disciplines, while supporting innovation and economic development and growth. Our training programs have provided over 1300 mentored research experiences for individuals who have gone on to healthcare and other STEMM professions that serve our population; our alumni can be found in multiple sectors in industry, academics, and healthcare across Maine, New England, and across the country. We have a commitment to serving the population of Maine.

We, the undersigned, have been impacted by the Research mission of MaineHealth in ways that have contributed to our personal growth, professional development, intellectual curiosity, preparation for the workforce, and skill development. In addition, we have become a part of this robust network of connected stakeholders passionate about biomedical research, health care, scientific literacy and communication, and the growth of our economy and quality of life in Maine.
