Express Your Support to CMMC/St. Mary's Colleagues Today

Many of you have requested ways to express your support to those affected by the events in Lewiston, especially for our colleagues at Central Maine Medical Center and St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center. A message board has been created for our MaineHealth community to share thoughts of care and appreciation to the CMMC/St. Mary’s health care teams for their dedication to the victims and their families.

A tragedy of this scale brings our communities together in unexpected ways, and our hope is that this small gesture of support from MaineHealth will convey how much we care and appreciate all they are doing. Appreciation Message Board

Caring for Our Patients and Each Other

A speech language pathologist who was inspired at a young age to join a career in health care. A social worker whose work emphasizes collaboration and creativity. A person experiencing homelessness who has found space and time for healing. These stories and others highlight our culture of caring, our focus on access and patient experience, our determination to build comprehensive and connected services, and the ways we leverage technology and research to enhance patient care.

Visit annualreport.mainehealth.org for stories from the past year, and to learn more about MaineHealth’s investments in our people, our patients and our communities.

Speak Up for Safety: New Policy Effective Jan. 1, 2024

Providing outstanding and safe patient care is a priority at MaineHealth. As our operating model work continues across our organization, our efforts to standardize policies (such as PPID) and practices to support care team members and a culture of safety have also progressed.

MaineHealth is taking the next step forward with a new system-wide policy that details how care team members can address an urgent patient safety issue or significant concern. Effective January 1, 2024 the Safety Stop, Escalation using CUS and Chain of Command policy encourages – and, in fact, requires – that care team members speak up for safety.

MaineHealth Patient Safety Officer Mark Parker, MD, says, “Speaking up for safety in health care means that anyone can speak up and address a safety concern at any time, in a non-judgmental way and without fear. This new system-wide policy reflects all of our values, especially being patient-centered, taking ownership and supporting a respectful environment. We want all care team members to know that if you see something concerning, there are tools you can use to get the attention you need.”

In the coming weeks you will hear more from your leader about this policy and the tools to support you. Thank you for all you do to advance a culture of safety at MaineHealth.

Working Together Episode 32: The Silent Threat

Cyber-attacks are as prevalent as ever, shutting down or crippling organizations across the globe. The health care industry – including MaineHealth – and others felt the residual impact of a cyber-attack last year when Kronos, a leading payroll system, was attacked. This attack alone cost our organization significant dollars, resource time and care team member frustration.

How do these attacks happen and what can we do to prevent this Silent Threat from impacting us at MaineHealth? In episode 32, Kelly speaks with Chief Information Security Officer Andy Seward about cybersecurity and the work happening behind the scenes at MaineHealth to protect our organization. Listen here

Support in Challenging Times

When tragedy occurs it can cause a great deal of mental, emotional and physical stress. Grief is a process, not an event. It takes time to go from shock and sadness to recovery and a “new normal” and everyone feels grief and loss in their own way. There is no standard timeline for grieving. There are resources available for you and your family.

  • First and foremost, take care of your own well-being and try to stick to your normal routine.
  • Please check in with your colleagues, family, friends and explore free and confidential resources available
  • If you or someone you know is in a crisis, call or text the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline 988 or chat online at https://988lifeline.org/

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Suggested Reading, Listening and Support: Native American Heritage Month

Native American Heritage Month is celebrated in November to honor the remarkable Native Americans who have contributed to our nation. It is a time to rejoice in diverse and rich cultures, histories, and traditions and to appreciate the widespread contributions of the Native peoples. We can use this time to spread awareness about tribes or to educate people about the various challenges faced by the Native Americans in the past and today. Throughout this month, we commit to continue supporting the remaining Native American tribes and reminding the world of their sacrifices. Learn more about ways to celebrate

Veterans Day is for Celebration, Thanks, and Honor

MaineHealth has a significant number of veterans who have either previously served or currently serve in the Reserves or National Guard. The Veterans Care Team Member Network (CTMN) formally launched in October 2023 as a resource for the MaineHealth community, whether it is educating our peers, serving as a resource for veterans and their families, or to better serve our patients who are veterans. There has been a large amount of interest from care team members who are veterans and some hospitals already have veterans committees that are doing great work. The Veterans CTMN is looking to unite these existing committees, augment local efforts, and expand awareness.

Meet a few members of the Veterans Care Team Member Network and learn about ways you can observe Veterans Day this November 11th. Visit the Veterans Day resource page

Are you a veteran? Send us (mhnews@mainehealth.org) a photo in uniform, and your rank, branch of service, and role at MaineHealth to be included in a Veterans Day tribute.

Information Technology

Microsoft Authenticator to Replace RSA Tokens

Microsoft Authenticator will replace RSA tokens for all MaineHealth care team members by the end of 2023. RSA tokens/SecurID will no longer work. Care team members who currently use an RSA token/SecurID will receive an email notification with instructions to replace RSA token/SecurID with Microsoft Authenticator over the next few weeks or months.

This is required by all care team members who access the MaineHealth network remotely. Please take action AFTER receiving the email prompt. If you have any questions or concerns, call the IT Help Desk at (207) 662-6400, or use the ServiceHub icon on your desktop. Learn more

Introducing the IT Service Desk

On November 14, the IT Help Desk will change its name to IT Service Desk to more accurately reflect the level of service the team provides to our care team members. This is also more in line with industry standards; a help desk implies break/fix support whereas our services go well beyond that.

Along with a new, fresh name, the Service Desk will introduce a live agent chat feature. This is just as it sounds: care team members can go to the ServiceHub homepage and with one click, initiate a real-time chat with a Service Desk agent. The team is excited about this new function, which will help reduce wait times and expedite service to our care team customers. The live agent chat will be available Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.

If you have any questions, please contact Pat Jones (patricia.jones@mainehealth.org) or Pam Souza (pamela.souza@mainehealth.org), Service Desk leaders.

Privacy and Compliance Corner

Celebrate Compliance Week

All care team members have a responsibility and accountability to be familiar with the MaineHealth Code of Ethical Conduct and to gain an understanding of the seven elements of an effective compliance program.

Are you familiar with our Code of Ethical Conduct? Do you know how to contact the HelpLine?

Take some time during Corporate Compliance and Ethics Week (Nov. 5-11) to visit the MaineHealth Corporate Compliance intranet page. Test your knowledge; identify your dedicated compliance officer, find links to important policies, as well as additional information to enhance collaboration with the Corporate Compliance team. Taking a few minutes for education helps promote a system-wide culture of compliance to ensure we are working together so our communities are the healthiest in America.
