Express Your Support to CMMC/St. Mary's Colleagues TodayMany of you have requested ways to express your support to those affected by the events in Lewiston, especially for our colleagues at Central Maine Medical Center and St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center. A message board has been created for our MaineHealth community to share thoughts of care and appreciation to the CMMC/St. Mary’s health care teams for their dedication to the victims and their families. A tragedy of this scale brings our communities together in unexpected ways, and our hope is that this small gesture of support from MaineHealth will convey how much we care and appreciate all they are doing. Appreciation Message Board Caring for Our Patients and Each OtherA speech language pathologist who was inspired at a young age to join a career in health care. A social worker whose work emphasizes collaboration and creativity. A person experiencing homelessness who has found space and time for healing. These stories and others highlight our culture of caring, our focus on access and patient experience, our determination to build comprehensive and connected services, and the ways we leverage technology and research to enhance patient care. Visit annualreport.mainehealth.org for stories from the past year, and to learn more about MaineHealth’s investments in our people, our patients and our communities. Speak Up for Safety: New Policy Effective Jan. 1, 2024Providing outstanding and safe patient care is a priority at MaineHealth. As our operating model work continues across our organization, our efforts to standardize policies (such as PPID) and practices to support care team members and a culture of safety have also progressed. MaineHealth is taking the next step forward with a new system-wide policy that details how care team members can address an urgent patient safety issue or significant concern. Effective January 1, 2024 the Safety Stop, Escalation using CUS and Chain of Command policy encourages – and, in fact, requires – that care team members speak up for safety. MaineHealth Patient Safety Officer Mark Parker, MD, says, “Speaking up for safety in health care means that anyone can speak up and address a safety concern at any time, in a non-judgmental way and without fear. This new system-wide policy reflects all of our values, especially being patient-centered, taking ownership and supporting a respectful environment. We want all care team members to know that if you see something concerning, there are tools you can use to get the attention you need.” In the coming weeks you will hear more from your leader about this policy and the tools to support you. Thank you for all you do to advance a culture of safety at MaineHealth. Working Together Episode 32: The Silent ThreatCyber-attacks are as prevalent as ever, shutting down or crippling organizations across the globe. The health care industry – including MaineHealth – and others felt the residual impact of a cyber-attack last year when Kronos, a leading payroll system, was attacked. This attack alone cost our organization significant dollars, resource time and care team member frustration. How do these attacks happen and what can we do to prevent this Silent Threat from impacting us at MaineHealth? In episode 32, Kelly speaks with Chief Information Security Officer Andy Seward about cybersecurity and the work happening behind the scenes at MaineHealth to protect our organization. Listen here |

Support in Challenging TimesWhen tragedy occurs it can cause a great deal of mental, emotional and physical stress. Grief is a process, not an event. It takes time to go from shock and sadness to recovery and a “new normal” and everyone feels grief and loss in their own way. There is no standard timeline for grieving. There are resources available for you and your family.
