Artificial Intelligence Usage at MaineHealth

This message is being sent to MaineHealth care team members.

Artificial Intelligence Usage at MaineHealth Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare has the potential to revolutionize the industry by enhancing diagnostic accuracy, improving patient outcomes, optimizing resource allocation and improving efficiency. However, it is crucial to follow guidelines and best practices to ensure the responsible, safe and ethical use of AI. Patient privacy and HIPAA rules still apply; please exercise caution about putting sensitive information into AI tools.

To support care team members using this technology, MaineHealth has developed “Artificial Intelligence Guidance,” available in MCN Policy Manager: (https://mainehealth.ellucid.com/documents/view/15920/active/1)

In addition, an AI Advisory Committee has been formed and will oversee all AI and predictive algorithm solutions being evaluated for use at MaineHealth. The Committee has representation across a full spectrum of areas within MaineHealth. It will monitor the performance of the predictive algorithm solutions once implemented. The group’s oversight will include the application of initial guidelines for the evaluation of AI requests, which will include assessments of clinical care and safety, data model applicability (including how the models were trained and/or developed), privacy and security, and ethics. This group will be responsible for making recommendations regarding each AI request to be included as part of its review by the appropriate IT Executive Subcommittee.
