2022 Compensation Program

 Dear Care Team Members,

As CEO Andy Mueller shared with you in February, MaineHealth continues to invest in our people in support of our vision of working together so our communities are the healthiest in America. We value the tremendous work you do and the diverse talents you bring to our organization. I am pleased to share with you today details of the 2022 MaineHealth compensation program.

Merit program

MaineHealth’s 2022 merit compensation program rewards individual performance and is aligned with our values. The table below outlines the 2021 performance ratings and their applicable merit increase for care team members hired prior to October 1, 2021. Providers, executives, residents, and employees represented by a labor union are not eligible.

2021 Performance Rating

Merit Factor

E (Exemplary)

3.5%

EE (Exceeds Expectations)

2.5%

SA (Successfully Achieves)

2.0%

PA (Partially Achieves)

1.5%

RD (Requires development)

0.0%

Providers, executives (AVPs and above), residents and care team members represented by a labor union do not participate in the merit program.

We actively evaluate our compensation practices to ensure they are equitable and competitive with the market. In 2021 MaineHealth invested more than $103 million for care team compensation, including merit increases (May); two minimum wage increases (Jan and Aug); a one-time market adjustment of at least 2% for all non-executive positions (Aug); and alignment of compensation for certain roles to remain competitive (Aug). These increases were carefully considered to address workforce challenges, attract new talent, and ensure our hard-working existing care team members were paid fairly.

One of the unintended outcomes of these investments is something called “compression.” Compression occurs when there’s little difference in pay between employees regardless of their experience.

Compression adjustments
Our HR and executive leaders have conducted extensive analysis over the past seven months to address some of this compression. Based on the data and grounded in our values, compensation adjustments have been made to those roles most impacted by compression. We will continue to evaluate our compensation practices to ensure they are competitive and fair – today and into the future.

MaineHealth is committed to providing all care team members with a competitive compensation and benefits program, including opportunities to plan for a secure and enjoyable retirement; a range of wellness and lifestyle benefits; and professional training and development. Building a culture where you feel valued and rewarded for your contributions is core to our mission, vision and values.

The compensation tool will be available to managers via Lawson Self Service beginning April 6. Your manager will reach out to you between April 6-21 to review your 2022 compensation statement. You can access your personal compensation statement on April 25.  Please refer to this FAQ for information about the 2022 Compensation Program.

Thank you for your ongoing contributions to the outstanding, compassionate care MaineHealth provides to our patients and communities.

Respectfully,

Scott Ballard
Chief People Officer
