Maine State Science Fair
Students from 31 schools (200 students) competed in the 2020 virtual Maine State Science Fair. This was an opportunity for Maine high school students to present original research and engineering projects to a state-wide audience of their peers and mentors including scientists, engineers, mathematicians, teachers, and other STEM professionals. Jess and Kevin Davis-Knowlton served as virtual judges in the categories of Nutrition and Development (Jess) and Engineering (Kevin). Patrick Wahlig from Falmouth High School took 1st place in Nutrition and Development (3rd place overall), and Vetri Vel from Bangor High School was 1st in Engineering (1st overall).
This event was organized by The Jackson Laboratory and the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance.

Ah!!!! The future!! Science, math and engineering students; science, math and engineering teachers; and science fairs. Maybe the best story today! (Is MMCRI involved in organizing the Maine State Science Fair?). Joe
ReplyDeleteMMCRI is not an organizer - Michael McKernan at JAX and STEM education specialists from Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance organize the event. The UMaine system also sponsors, and we annually have MMCRI folks participate in interviewing students and serving as award judges.
DeleteHi Joe,
ReplyDeleteThe Career Development Association usually takes lead for MMCRI's participation. The first year we were involved was 5 or 6 years back when the Maine State Science Fair was held in conjunction with the Maine Science Festival. Now they are held as separate events. MSSF was able to organize a virtual 2020 event to judge high school science projects, but we'll have to wait until next year's MSF to present the hands on biomedical science table that we had planned.
Jess, thanks for the info. You too Lucy. Keep me updated. Happy to help. Many gave us opportunities when we were young. Now it's our turn for the next generations.
DeleteGreat job Jess! So glad to hear you were able to be involved with this year's science fair virtually.
